Isabel and Julian Bannerman have worked together designing and creating gardens and garden buildings since the 1980’s. Together they have won gold medals at the Chelsea Flower show and hold a royal warrant from the Prince of Wales. Their bestselling book Landscape of Dreams covers fourteen commissions. It describes their art, inspirations, and how their life is completely bound up with creating spaces, working with plants and architecture.
Following the success of Landscape of Dreams Isabel was commissioned to write a book about the garden she and Julian created for themselves between 2012 and 2019 at Trematon Castle. Always fascinated by scent and smell especially in the process of designing gardens, Isabel based the book, Scent Magic, on her notes and diaries and devised a very free-form, sensualist, monologue featuring her husband, Julian, a “garden making genius”. The book includes historical and horticultural information on the scented plants with which Isabel works and about which she writes and contains her photographic record of the garden and her botanical scanography of plants.
The lecture will feature illustrations from the book and a broad discussion of how the garden at Trematon was made and the scented plants they used in making it.
