Green Hill Farm (with its online division Green Hill Hostas) is among the leading introducers of new Hostas in the world. Their high quality of plants with very large root systems is well known. (“Great roots make a great growing Hosta!” as it says on their website.) Bob is nationally known for his lectures and many articles on Hostas as well as the unique Hostas he hybridizes.
Green Hill Farm sells Hostas at retail and wholesale to Hosta collectors, home gardeners, Hosta clubs and nurseries worldwide. Online at www.hostahosta.com, they offer GREAT hostas as well as a newsletter and a wealth of Hosta information. A unique subscription newspaper, “The Green Hill Gossip” and the “Gossip Jr.”, is published in August and November.
Bob has been very active in the American Hosta Society, serving previously as the Editor of “The Hosta Journal”, the principle publication of the American Hosta Society, and Vice President for The Genus Hosta. He was the recipient of the 2003 Alex J. Summers Distinguished Merit Award. Bob is co-founder and is Executive Secretary of The American Hosta Growers Association, a professional trade organization for hosta nurseries which selects the Hosta of the Year.
Hosta hybridizing has been his passion for almost 30 years. In 2008 he was awarded the Eunice Fisher Distinguished Hybridizer Merit Award by the American Hosta Society. He has introduced about 100 Hostas to date and has plans to add five or so to that number each year. ‘Guacamole’, 1994, and Hosta of the Year in 2002, his best known cultivar is probably in your garden. ‘Orange Marmalade’ PP#16,742 is his first patented Hosta. ‘Corkscrew’, ‘Ginsu Knife’, ‘Cracker Crumbs’, ‘Crumb Cake’, ‘Tongue Twister’, ‘First Frost’, ‘One Man’s Treasure’, ‘Smiley Face’, ‘Sweet Sunshine’ and ‘Curly Fries’ are among his best introductions, along with some of his newest Hostas, ‘Ambrosia’ and ‘First Blush’. The latter displays a breakthrough reddish purple blush in its leaves.
A true expert in hosta lore, Bob will talk about his favorite Hostas and sell a few as well when he comes to Memphis in September. Please join us. Hopefully someone will bring Curly Fries for the refreshment table!
